Sustainable palm oil, extractive industries, illegal trade, transboundary collaboration, Green Economy and zoonotic disease were among the key issues on the agenda of the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) Regional Meeting – West Africa, which was held 12-13 April 2016 in Monrovia, Liberia.
The meeting was hosted by GRASP and the Forest Development Authority (FDA) of Liberia. The GRASP Regional Meeting – West Africa brought together delegates from nine West African range States, along with experts from conservation organizations, United Nations agencies, funders and private companies working in the region.
GRASP stages regional meetings in Africa and Asia in order to promote collaboration and coordination among its partners, and this was the first-ever meeting among the West African partners. Previous reginal meetings were held in Central Africa (Brazzaville, Congo), East Africa (Bujumbura, Burundi) and Southeast Asia (Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia).
Highlights of the GRASP Regional meeting – West Africa included the launch the GRASP – UN-REDD+ Mapping Project, a carbon and great ape population and habitat online tool, and keynote presentations on illegal trade in great apes, Ebola, and extractive industries.…
