Global Commons Alliance to help tackle threats to health of the planet
All life on Earth depends on clean air and water, biodiversity, healthy land and oceans, and a stable climate. These are the global commons: the shared resources that ensure a habitable planet upon which we can all thrive.
Speaking at the opening of the Ecosperity 2019 conference in Singapore, Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) acknowledged “the extremely worrying picture” coming from science about the state of the planet, and highlighted a new Global Commons Alliance that is being set-up to help tackle the problem. GEF CEO Statement on the IPBES Global Assessment Report
The new report from the Intergovernmental Panel for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, or IPBES, sends a crystal-clear message about life on Earth, and what we stand to lose if we don’t act now.
There is still time to reverse these losses. But to do that, we must radically change the way we live, including how we use energy to power our societies, grow our food, and manage our waste.
We need a new way of doing business. We must build new coalitions and partnerships to transform the key economic systems that support how we eat, how we move and how we produce and consume. Read more >>
President of Peru joins call for sustainable production of agricultural commodities
The GEF-supported, UNDP-led Good Growth Conference, held in Lima and the Amazon regions of Peru, was opened by the President of Peru, Martín Vizcarra, who expressed urgency in the face of climate change and mass biodiversity loss.
GEF CEO Naoko Ishii echoed the President’s concerns, during her welcome address, calling for an urgent overhaul in the way we produce, demand and finance our agriculture system to prevent any further damage to our planet. Read more >>
