Faced with criticisms to the forest sector, the Danzer group has given a sustainable orientation to forestry in the Congo Basin, where many gorillas live. Please download the ARTE film HERE.
The large tropical rainforest of north Congo hosts two third of gorillas found in Central Africa. They do not live in national parks, but in forest areas owned by a subsidiary of the German-Swiss forestry group, Danzer. Holder of an ecolabel, they have set up a reasoned forest management plan which respects the rotation cycle of trees: Species inventory, training of fellers and specific target felling of trees... These measures help to control deforestation, allowing gorillas to continue living in their natural habitat. Supervised by ecosystem specialists, the company consults the pygmy tribes that inhabit the forest and also enables those who live in the Ngombe area to live a better life. However, some problems are yet to be solved: The opening of paths in the forest makes it ease for poachers, who traffic bush meat, especially gorillas... Find more...
