The deliberations of the meeting were about the following major topics: Strengthening REDD-related knowledge at local, national and regional levels, the creation of technical abilities for measuring and monitoring carbon stocks of forests in the Congo Basin and the promotion of the REDD concept of sustainable management projects for Congo Basin forests.

Bangui, 13-14 March, Holding of a workshop on the implementation of the “Project to build institutional capacities on REDD-related issues for forest sustainable management in the Congo Basin”. This meeting included two highlights, namely the opening ceremony and introductions.

Chaired by Mr. Gustave DOUNGOUBE, CAR REDD focal point, deliberations at the workshop included three sessions.

During session 0, the expected results of this workshop, as well as its objectives, were presented by Martin TADOUM, COMIFAC Deputy Executive Secretary. The main objective was to carry out the official launching of REDD regional project. This presentation revealed that the expected results focus on good understanding, thorough knowledge and the active participation of stakeholders in the project.

The first session was dedicated to the presentation of Mrs Carole MEGEVAND from the World Bank; task Manager of the project on an overview of the project.

After having recalled the countries concerned by the project, she stressed its implementation clauses in all the six Congo Basin countries covered by the project (Cameroon, CAR, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, the DRC and Congo), as well as its intervention orientation and the implementation period of 5 years, from 2011 to 2016.

On the first day, presentations concerned the following topics: institutional arrangements, the project implementation manual, saving clauses, especially environmental and social and regional assessments, as well as information on actions undertaken for the launching of works.

On the second day, presentations concerned information on the WB disbursement procedures, acquisition procedures (goods, services, recruitment of consultants, etc.) and the road map for the finalization of the Project setting up.

Participants to the workshop wish to see the civil society more involved in the implementation of the Project.
