EleWatch: Project launch-Observatory on value of elephants based on elephant-watching tourism

The French NGO Des Elephants & des Hommes, in partnership with the NGOs IFAW France & Afrique francophone and Awely, are launching an observatory project to assess the value of elephants based on elephant-watching tourism ("EleWatch Network)". The initiative’s promoters are driven by the belief that ecotourism has a crucial role to play in elephant conservation and better coexistence with local populations, in Central Africa as well.

They are inviting all stakeholders involved in elephant-watching tourism to join the network: site managers, tour operators, NGOs and associations concerned with the activity, researchers, etc. These actors will have a chance to share their data on the sites concerned (location, number of visitors). It takes just a few minutes to contribute to the initiative! "

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
