Drivers of deforestation and forest degradation: Findings of a participatory analysis of the TNS and TRIDOM landscapes (Cameroon, Congo, Gabon and CAR)
The DPSIR approach (Drivers) - Pressures - State - Impacts - Reactions, a model designed by the European Union (EU), was used in this study. The tool was developed to better assess the state of the environment for use by decision-makers. It is built on five elements which are all interconnected by causal links : a driver, that is human activity, exerts pressure on the environment, which translates into modification of the general state of the environment, which can impact the natural heritage and man.
The latter, depending to the seriousness of the impact, will react and cause society to respond. The fifth element of the approach, the "reactions" or "responses", is made up of all the political measures and instruments implemented by society in order to protect people in the area of forest management, integrated with the other sectors. These include preventive measures with respect to the drivers, curative measures with respect to the pressures and the State and mitigating measures with respect to the State and impacts.
