Lemonde/The Agence Française de développement responds to criticism for delivering Congo’s forests to large concession operators
A coalition of environmental NGOs are calling on the Central African Forest Initiative to reject French-owned projects underway in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Until now, the tug of war between the environmental NGOs and the Initiative for the Forests of Central Africa (CAFI, in English) had played out behind closed doors in technical commissions or in the corridors of parliament. On Wednesday 21 June, it turned into an official matter when a letter was sent to Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, asking her to withdraw funding from a project" which could severely degrade the second largest tropical forest in the world located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo [DRC] and release billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere."
