COMIFAC: Quarterly executive summary on progress status of COMIFAC activities (April - June 2014)

 

This executive summary outlines progress achieved in activities undertaken during the second quarter of 2014 (April to June) towards implementation of the COMIFAC Executive Secretariat’s Annual Work Plan. Activities revolved around the following components: (i) Planning, monitoring and evaluation of implementation of the Convergence Plan (ii) Communication, subregional consultation and capacity building ; (iii) International dialogue on forests and the environment and promotion of COMIFAC ; and (iv) Coordinating implementation of the Convergence Plan.

 

 (i) Planning, monitoring and evaluation of implementation of the Convergence Plan;

 

Central African experts validate the revised Convergence Plan

 

Launched in 2010, the Convergence Plan review process came to a close with the holding of the Sub-regional Forum to validate the Revised Convergence Plan, held in Brazzaville (Congo) from June 16 to 17, 2014. The Convergence Plan came with a series of results and indicators encapsulated in six priority intervention areas broken down into strategic objectives, operational objectives, expected results and performance indicators (impact, effect and results) as well as three cross-cutting areas of intervention. The Plan is expected to be tabled for validation at the next extraordinary meeting of the COMIFAC Council of Ministers slated to hold in July 2014 and for approval at the next Summit of Heads of State and Government of Central Africa.

 

Manual for monitoring and evaluation and monitoring platform for implementation of Convergence Plan: two tools in COMIFAC’s monitoring and evaluation system finalized

 

 

 COMIFAC’s monitoring and evaluation system is gradually being set up. Achievements include: (i) development of COMIFAC’s monitoring and evaluation manual by an international Consultant hired with support from the GIZ support project to COMIFAC and whose findings were presented in Yaounde on 11 June 2014; and (ii) a training session for the Executive Secretariat team and COMIFAC National Coordinators held on 15 and 16 May 2014 in Brazzaville on the functioning and leadership of the Platform for Monitoring and Evaluation of implementation of the Convergence Plan developed by a consultancy hired with assistance from the MSP/WB/GEF project. The tools shall be popularized and training on their use will be provided to other stakeholders in implementation and monitoring of the Convergence Plan.

Development and institutionalization of a PAFC certification system for the Congo basin: opening of the second public consultation on Sustainable Forest Management Certification Standard, 23 May 2020 - 22 June 2020

This second public consultation will be open for a period of 30 days from tomorrow Saturday the 23rd of May 2020 and will be closed on Monday the 22nd of June 2020. The public consultation is open to all stakeholders of forest management in the Congo Basin interested in participating to the PAFC Congo Basin certification standards development process.

Forest defenders on the COVID-19 frontline stand ready to assist the global EU response – Fern

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
