Douala, Cameroon, 24 October 2017- the Prince de Galles hotel hosted the fourth meeting of the decision-making committee of the "Implementing Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing in COMIFAC countries” Project. Chaired by Mr. Raymond Ndomba Ngoye, Executive Secretariat of the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), in his capacity as the Committee Chairman, the purpose of the meeting was to validate the financial and technical report (2015-2018) and provide guidelines for the new project.

In his introductory remarks, Mr. Raymond Ndomba Ngoye welcomed the appointment of the CBD Cameroon focal point to the position of Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable development. "This is a tribute to sub-regional expertise" he remarked. He also welcomed the involvement and commitment of all the stakeholders in the implementation of this project for the sustainable management of forest resources in Central Africa.

His statement was followed by successive presentations on the project technical and financial report, a general overview of the project, and the respective guidelines delivered respectively by Mr. Martial Nkolo, Head of the GIZ Program to Support COMIFAC and Acting Director of the GIZ Sustainable Management of Congo Basin forests Program, Ms. Beatrice Kouossu, administrative and financial manager of the GIZ Sustainable Management of Congo Basin forests Program and Mr. Chouaibou Nchoutpouen, Biodiversity Expert and ABS Coordinator of COMIFAC.

Following the discussions that were held after these presentations, the Committee validated the technical report of the project and acknowledged the financial report and provided guidelines to be considered in the implementation of the new project. The Committee recommended that the GIZ provide the members of the Committee with copies of the financial report.

In closing, the COMIFAC Executive Secretary thanked all the delegates for their active participation, which had contributed to the success and smooth conduct of the Decision-making committee meeting. For the record, the ABS principle (access to and sharing of benefits) means access to genetic resources and related traditional knowledge must be associated with the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use. These may be monetary or non-monetary benefits such as scientific collaboration or technology transfer.
