CIRAD-No, forest management plans do not exacerbate deforestation!
Forest management plans (PAs) are considered the main tools for managing the forest resource sustainably. However an article published in early 2016concluded that deforestation in the Congo was worse in forest concessions with forest management plans than in those without. These results were a real bombshell, but may in fact just be a damp squib: they have since been contradicted by a working document signed by 22 international researchers.
Explanations from Alain Karsenty, Economist at Cirad, Tropical forest specialist and main author of the document.
