FAO: CAFI invests USD 10 million in DRC forest monitoring system to tackle climate change

The FAO will provide technical support to help manage the world’s second largest tropical forest basin.

27 January 2017, Kinshasa - An investment of USD 10 million to help implement the DRC’s national forest surveillance system as part of efforts to combat climate change was presented to stakeholders Thursday in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The FAO will provide technical support for the implementation of the National Forest Monitoring System (SNSF), developed with FONAREDD funding using funds allocated by the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI), to produce high quality reliable data on forests, which are vital for combating climate change caused by deforestation and forest degradation. A preliminary work plan for the implementation of the program in 2017 was presented during the workshop.
