Ramsar: Congo designates Bas-Kouilou-Yombo as a Ramsar Site

The Republic of the Congo has named Bas-Kouilou-Yombo as its 14th Wetland of International Importance. The new Ramsar Site (Site no. 2325) includes the estuary of the River Kouilou and its sandy shores and sand banks, other permanent and temporary rivers, lakes, the Yombo lagoon, marshes including some dominated by Cyperus papyrus, and flooded and swamp forests including mangrove forests.

Due to its diverse ecosystems and the permanent presence of water, the Site maintains populations of chimpanzees, sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii), African buffalo and hippopotamus, and fish such as the slender lungfish (Protopterus dolloi) which is endemic to the Congo Basin and neighbouring river basins.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
