africa.lalibre "Handouts are hampering development in African countries "
Deogratias Niyonkuru is one of many prominent figures who have decried the pitfalls of humanitarian aid, especially in Africa. In his book "For the Dignity of Peasant Farmers ", the Burundi-born agricultural engineer describes his work with the non-profit association Adisco, the winner of the 2016 King Baudouin Foundation award. He pulls no punches in the book in which he condemns the egregious blunders of non-governmental organizations (video).
"The fruit of prosperity is harvested from the tree of effort", this Burundian proverb is a motto of sorts for Adisco, the Burundian non-profit organization that has made Supporting Comprehensive Development and Solidarity on the Hills its mantra of more than ten years. "The country will develop not thanks to handouts but because of men and women who work together. "
