The first conference on the Initiative of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel (GGWSSI) was held in Dakar from 2 to 7 May 2015 under the theme "Restoring Africa Landscapes - The way forward". The ministerial segment of the May 3, 2016 ended with the reading of the Final Declaration of the Conference.
From the concept of 7000km green belt ranging from Senegal to Djibouti to halt the advancing desert, the Great Green Wall has evolved into a pan-African program for sustainable rural development aimed at combating land degradation and desertification; improve food, environmental and economic security, support communities in adapting to climate change.
The technical and financial partners, civil society and private sector shared actions and initiatives included in the framework of sustainable land management and soils restoration. From exchanges, it is clear that to achieve the results of the GGWSSI, synergy and complementarity of stakeholders, mobilization of technical expertise and financial resources, inclusive and interdisciplinary approach are essential.bora.masumbuko@iucn.org / felicite.mangang@iucn.org / www.sawap.net
