AVP- Environment/COP25: Denis Sassou N’Guesso calls for concrete actions against deforestation…

This appeal by the President of the Republic of Congo was made, once again, during his speech at the opening of COP25, on 2 December 2019, in Madrid (Spain).

Denis Sassou N'Guesso, chosen as the spokesperson for Central Africa, who remains faithful to his commitments, made a solemn appeal at the climate summit to fight deforestation; "I remain more than ever faithful to my signature of the Paris Agreement and I have decided to go even further in our concrete commitment against deforestation, by going beyond incantatory speeches".

Aware of the disasters caused by climate change, Denis Sassou N'Guesso drew the of the international community to the realities and consequences of climate change after COP21:"After the Paris agreements of 12 December 2015, the dangers are increasingly greater in the world due to climate change. People experience these threats on a daily basis through hurricanes, floods, landslides, etc.”

The Congolese Head of State, spokesperson for the Congo Basin sub-region, refuses to be an observer, but more of an actor in the face of the negative effects of climate change.“I will not sit and watch the destruction of the Amazon forests, but I am an actor who makes the whole world benefit from this second lung of humanity that is the Congo Basin forests”.

He also recalled the capacity of the Congo Basin forests “Do I have to remind you! The forests of the Congo Basin make 220 million hectares”.

Denis Sassou N'Guesso sounded the alarm so that this COP25 would not be just another meeting. “The 25^th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) must no longer be a summit of wishful thinking, but of concrete commitments to combat climate change”.
