Program
The 11th annual Summer Academy 'Energy and the Environment' will review the state and challenges of the global energy transition (organised by IKEM (the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility) and the University of Greifswald). Across the globe, climate change is driving the development of sustainable energy sources. What are the main geo-political, economic, technological, societal, grid, legal and policy challenges that have revealed themselves in the process of renewable energy integration? What lessons can we draw so far? The Academy will offer an interdisciplinary and international view on these topics using the German Energiewende as a point of reference:

Monday | The program will begin with a scientific diagnosis of the state of climate change, after which (the effectiveness of) international climate policy and regional (US and EU) frameworks are analyzed. Carbon pricing and climate justice is discussed.
Tuesday | The state of the global energy matrix is up next: Which energy sources dominate the market, what is the influence of new sources like shale gas and tight oil on the geopolitical energy landscape, how has China’s economic boom affected the energy market, and what are the energy challenges and solutions for developing countries?
Wednesday | Against this background, the focus of the program will narrow to renewable energy sources: Beginning with a review of the German energy transition and going on to successful policy measures, requirements like grid expansion and stakeholder participation, long-term remuneration schemes, the effect of the financial crisis on RES development, followed by the role and importance of energy storage, addressing battery solutions, hydrogen conversion and the framework for power-to-gas development.
Thursday | The effective accommodation of renewable energy on international electricity markets is up next: Market stability and security of supply, the possible design of electricity markets capable of absorbing more and more renewable energy, the importance of international cooperation,  the role of interconnectors in establishing an integrated market and the place for capacity mechanisms.
Friday | All issues discussed during the week will come together on the last day, which is dedicated to off-shore wind energy. The potential and challenges associated with this energy source will be discussed by transmission system operators, project developers, policy-makers, legal experts and think-tanks, ending with an interdisciplinary panel discussion. The event ends on a festive note with a good-bye barbecue.

Upcoming Events

Currently there are no events.

This calendar is based on information provided by COMIFAC and the Franco-German support office is considered a complementary event schedule to the official calendar posted on COMIFAC's website. (http://www.comifac.org/events). It offers a broad overview of international and regional events that are directly linked to CBFP's objectives: major conferences and meetings, workshops and training sessions and other activities scheduled by CBFP Facilitation and its member organisations.

Our choice is by no means exhaustive and depends largely on our partners' notice. Every partner organisation is thus welcome to contribute to a rich variety of posted events and to share its schedule with CBFP's Facilitation and the other members! We may also, upon request, forward your input to the COMIFAC webmaster.
