UN-REDD Programme: Workshop on spatial planning tools for enhancing multiple benefits from REDD+

From 17 to 21 June a technical training workshop will bring together participants from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation, Tourism (Department of Forest inventories and the Department of Sustainable Development), the Satellite Observatory of Central African Forests (OSFAC) and the Regional postgraduate school of  tropical forest development and integrated management(ERAIFT). The workshop aims to demonstrate the ways in which establishing policy priorities for the multiple benefits of REDD + can be used to identify potential priority areas for REDD + actions and train participants to conduct the analysis themselves.

The DRC is one of the most advanced UN-REDD partner countries in terms of preparedness, as evidenced by the launch of its framework strategy in Doha in December 2012. The UN-REDD Programme supports the Democratic Republic of Congo in reducing the social and environmental risks of REDD + and enhancing environmental and social "multiple benefits" from REDD +. The location of REDD + actions and how they are implemented are crucial in ensuring that REDD+ effectively comes to strengthen these multiple benefits. Support for initial decision-making on the location of REDD + actions has been provided by the report of the UN-REDD Programme "Mapping potential biodiversity benefits from REDD + - the Democratic Republic of Congo", the result of collaboration between MECNT-DIAF OSFAC and UNEP-WCMC. The report was finalized in 2012 and is available online in FRENCH. (www.unredd.net/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=8050&Itemid=53)  et en ANGLAIS (www.unredd.net/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=7920&Itemid=53).

In order to provide further support for REDD + related policy-making, the UN-REDD Programme tests the use of planning tools, including the use of a computer tool for conservation planning (Marxan). A capacity building workshop on the use of these spatial planning tools will be held in DRC in June. The purpose of this workshop is to develop the DRC’s capacity to use these tools to locate priority areas for its REDD + actions, as another step towards fine-tuning its national REDD + strategy.

Upcoming Events

Currently there are no events.

This calendar is based on information provided by COMIFAC and the Franco-German support office is considered a complementary event schedule to the official calendar posted on COMIFAC's website. (http://www.comifac.org/events). It offers a broad overview of international and regional events that are directly linked to CBFP's objectives: major conferences and meetings, workshops and training sessions and other activities scheduled by CBFP Facilitation and its member organisations.

Our choice is by no means exhaustive and depends largely on our partners' notice. Every partner organisation is thus welcome to contribute to a rich variety of posted events and to share its schedule with CBFP's Facilitation and the other members! We may also, upon request, forward your input to the COMIFAC webmaster.
