SMART Presentation - 5th April in Yaoundé, Cameroun

In the face of escalating pressure on wildlife (for instance, 60% of forest elephants perished between 2002 and 2011), a host of initiatives are being launched at all levels (local, national, transborder and subregional) to protect wildlife in Central Africa, especially through effective wildlife law enforcement, particularly laws relating to Anti-Poaching Efforts (APE).

There is one condition required (though not sufficient) to improve on APE which is for APE actors to be able to assess their efforts and results, in time and space: this is known as "Law Enforcement Monitoring".

In several Congo Basin countries  (notably the DRC and Gabon) monitoring is conducted using the MIST method which was developed in the 90s and is currently being used in a number of countries across Africa and Asia.

In the coming months and around the world, the SMART method will gradually replace MIST in requesting countries.

SMART is a method that enjoys the backing of several technical partners  : CITES-MIKE, FZS, NCZ, WCS, WWF and ZSL.

This shift may equally serve as an opportunity to establish a law enforcement monitoring tool such as SMART where it is as yet inexistent.

To ensure the widest possible circulation of the latest news on SMART, WCS invites you on Friday, 5 April at 2.30 p.m. to the TNS Foundation (Yaounde) to listen to a presentation (followed by a question and answer session) on SMART, conducted by  Dr Emma Stokes.

- Within WCS, Emma serves as the technical director of SMART deployment in WCS programs in Africa, Asia, South America and marine zones.

- Within the global SMART partnership (CITES-MIKE, FZS, NCZ, WCS, WWF and ZSL), Emma is the WCS representative.

Upcoming Events

Currently there are no events.

This calendar is based on information provided by COMIFAC and the Franco-German support office is considered a complementary event schedule to the official calendar posted on COMIFAC's website. (http://www.comifac.org/events). It offers a broad overview of international and regional events that are directly linked to CBFP's objectives: major conferences and meetings, workshops and training sessions and other activities scheduled by CBFP Facilitation and its member organisations.

Our choice is by no means exhaustive and depends largely on our partners' notice. Every partner organisation is thus welcome to contribute to a rich variety of posted events and to share its schedule with CBFP's Facilitation and the other members! We may also, upon request, forward your input to the COMIFAC webmaster.
