 The Side-event will present the lessons learned from a project funded by the French Globlal Environment Fund (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD), and carried out in Central Africa and Brazil (FORAFAMA project) by CIFOR, ONFI, CIRAD, FRM, TEREA and IRD.

 

 The FORAFAMA project seeks to summarise available knowledge on the links between forest management and climate change in Central Africa and in Amazonia, to support pilot projects in forest concessions, and to contribute to strengthening the positions of states and forest societies in future discussions on the implementation of the REDD+ process. During a two hours session, debates on lessons learned will target:

 

-       Opportunity costs of the main land uses (sustainable forest management, agro-industrial crops, smallholder farming, and conservation) in the Congo basin, in order to evaluate avoided deforestation costs.

-       The evaluation of forest carbon stocks, the impact of sustainable forest management with or without reduced impact logging on those carbon stocks, and forest regeneration after logging.

-       The utilisation of advanced technologies (radar, very high resolution) for the spatial monitoring of forest degradation.

-       The implementation of REDD demonstration activities based on sustainable forest management according to pilot projects carried out in Brazil, Cameroon and Democratic Republic of Congo.

-       The potential impact of negotiations on REDD on sustainable forest management policy adopted in the tropical area.

 

Résumé ( max ,300 mots)

 

 Le Side-event présentera les leçons tirées d’un projet financé par le Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM) et l’Agence Française pour le Développement (AFD), et mis en œuvre en Afrique Centrale et au Brésil (projet FORAFAMA) par le CIFOR, ONFI, le CIRAD, FRM, TEREA et l’IRD. Ce projet vise à faire la synthèse des connaissances actuelles sur les liens entre aménagement forestier et lutte contre le changement climatique en Afrique Centrale et en Amazonie, à appuyer des projets pilotes basés sur l’aménagement forestier, et à renforcer les positions des Etats et du secteur forestier dans les débats  sur la mise en œuvre du processus REDD+. Les leçons tirées qui feront l’objet d’un débat pendant une session de deux heures concernent :

 

-       Les coûts d’opportunité des principaux usages des sols (exploitation forestière durable, agriculture industrielle, agriculture paysanne, conservation) dans le bassin du Congo avec pour objectif d’estimer le coût de la non-déforestation,.

-       L'évaluation des stocks de carbone, l’analyse de l’impact sur les stocks de carbone de l’exploitation forestière durable avec et sans techniques d’exploitation à faible impact, et la reconstitution des stocks de carbone après exploitation forestière.

-       L’utilisation de technologies de pointe (radar, très haute résolution) pour le suivi spatial de la dégradation des forêts.

-       Les conditions de mise en œuvre de projets REDD basées sur l’aménagement forestier durable selon les expériences de projets pilotes conduits au Brésil, au Cameroun et en République Démocratique du Congo.

-       L’Impact potentiel des négociations sur le mécanisme REDD  sur les politiques de gestion forestière durable adoptées en zone tropicale
