International Conference: Multipurpose Forest Management, Niigata, Japan

Inherited forests from previous generations and have used these forests for various purposes, and it is our responsibility to ensure that forests are handed down to future generations. Numerous studies have examined techniques for managing and sustaining multi-functional forests and have applied these techniques in regions worldwide. Since the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol at the Third Conference of the Parties (COP3) in 1997, techniques for evaluating carbon sequestration by forests and managing forests sustainably to sequester carbon have been examined in greater detail. Related government programmes include the “Global Initiative on Forests and Climate” launched by the Australian government in 2007 with the aim of promoting sustainable forest management and new forest planting to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions. Another concern is that climate change will lead to stronger tropical depressions that will damage forests to greater extents than at present.

Given this situation, we must review past methods and develop new techniques of forest management. Such studies will be aided by recent advances in scientific and technological research tools, including progress in mathematics and computing technology related to detailed modelling, GPS determinations of location, and laser measurements from aircraft. An international conference held in Utsunomiya, Japan, in October 2004 discussed the roles of forests for coming generations. In an upcoming international research meeting, we wish to discuss state-of-the-art techniques and practices for managing forest resources sustainably, enhancing the various functions of forests, and maintaining forest ecosystems.

Upcoming Events

Currently there are no events.

This calendar is based on information provided by COMIFAC and the Franco-German support office is considered a complementary event schedule to the official calendar posted on COMIFAC's website. (http://www.comifac.org/events). It offers a broad overview of international and regional events that are directly linked to CBFP's objectives: major conferences and meetings, workshops and training sessions and other activities scheduled by CBFP Facilitation and its member organisations.

Our choice is by no means exhaustive and depends largely on our partners' notice. Every partner organisation is thus welcome to contribute to a rich variety of posted events and to share its schedule with CBFP's Facilitation and the other members! We may also, upon request, forward your input to the COMIFAC webmaster.
